Powerboat racing’s biggest stars took the stage at the San Diego Bayfair this weekend where P1 SuperStock USA teams got to grips on the Mission Bay.

Tim McDonald and Mike DeFrees of Oregon Custom Marine finished at the top of the podium for the weekend after winning round nine of the SuperStock USA Championship this morning and finishing second in round ten this afternoon.

“All weekend long we led races, we won, and we qualified number one,” said OCM driver Tim McDonald. “We had to start dead last in round ten and it was a lot of work to drive from the back to the front. With a spin out and a little bit of bumping and grinding out there, Mike just ran away with his experience and told me how to drive the boat.”

Mountain Dew, Oregon Custom Marine, and Miss Madison all spun their boats out during round ten. Peters and May crew Azam Ali and Kyle Sanborn were penalized for running their boat directly into a buoy when rounding the right-handed dogleg turn in a heated battle for first place with JD Byrider.

The SuperStock USA teams had to skip the dogleg turn after the buoy came loose and run an oval course.

After starting in the outside lane, team Oregon Custom Marine spun their boat out about halfway through the race but still managed to come from behind and finish in second.

“Having to invert the start and come from the eighth position to second was amazing,” said OCM throttleman Mike DeFrees. “Tim drove the wheels off that boat, I did not have many expectations to make that happen.”

By winning in San Diego the OCM crew finished second overall in the P1 SuperStock USA Championship point standings. Both McDonald and DeFrees have a lot to be excited about heading into the offseason.
